The Great White Continent: An Expedition Cruise to Antarctica

Updated: May 15, 2023

A luxury expedition cruise to Antarctica is an unforgettable adventure that combines the thrill of exploration with the comfort and sophistication of a high-end resort vacation. Imagine waking up to breathtaking views from your veranda of icebergs and humpback whales, enjoying gourmet meals and a luxurious spa on board, and experiencing the pristine beauty of the continent in a way that few people ever have. I had the privilege of going on the Seabourn Venture in December, which was a one-in-a-lifetime type of experience.

One of the unique aspects of an expedition cruise to Antarctica is the opportunity to explore the continent's remote and pristine wilderness. These trips are typically conducted by small, specialized ships that are designed for navigating the region's challenging waters and weather conditions. For example, the Venture only has 132 all veranda cabins. On board all expedition ships, you'll have access to expert guides and naturalists who provide lectures, workshops, and guided walks to help you get the most out of your trip. I was amazed at the expedition team on the Venture. They were all experts in their fields, with an enthusiasm and passion to share their knowledge.

Guests also have the chance to observe and learn about Antarctica's diverse and fascinating wildlife. From penguins and seals to whales and seabirds, the region is home to an incredible array of species that you'll get to observe up close. We saw more penguins than I could ever count, including their newly hatched chicks, along with the variety of seals hunting them, and seabirds trying to steal their eggs. We also saw at least three kinds of whales.

Of course, this is still a luxury expedition cruise so it's not complete without top-notch amenities and accommodations. Many of these trips offer luxurious cabins and suites with private balconies, gourmet dining options, and a variety of onboard activities and entertainment. Being on a Seabourn ship, we of course availed ourselves of the champaign and caviar, but there were also hot tubs, saunas, a spa, and fitness center, along with multiple lounges and gourmet dining venues.

If you're considering a luxury expedition cruise to Antarctica, it's important to consult with your travel advisor to find the right one for you. Factors to consider will be their safety and sustainability record, the size of the ship, the amenities and style of the cabins, as well as the ambience on board. Although I didn't anticipate that a veranda would make a huge difference, we definitely enjoyed being able to go out and see whales and penguins from our cabin. We also found that we really appreciated the quality of food on Seabourn and the high quality of the expedition team and staff.
